Cherry Trees
Ann Dent has painted cherry trees in Palace Garden Terrace and Brunswick Gardens, London, from 1981 to 2008. Many of her paintings are in private collections.
“When I first saw the cherry trees in blossom in Palace Gardens Terrace, I was overwhelmed by their magnificence and beauty. I felt compelled to paint them. Mastering how to capture the blossom's delicacy using oil paint was a challenge but I found it the perfect medium for representing the grandeur and strength of the trees as well as the subtlety and delicacy of the blossom”.
In 1993 and 1997 Ann travelled to Japan to observe and paint the Cherry Blossom Festival. This experience had a profound impact on her understanding of and relationship with her subject matter.
"Looking so closely at the ancient trees, revered for their spiritual properties prompted me to review my whole approach to recording what I see. At once there was a fusion between the experience I had accumulated as a westerner with what I saw represented in the blossom, that life like the blossom is ephemeral. From that moment on the way I painted changed.”
