Through Ann's connections with The Japanese Society she became Artist in Residence in Kawashima, Gifu Prefecture, in the spring of 1993. She drew the environs of the town including local celebrations and festivities. She returned to Japan in 1997 to record the Cherry Blossom Festival for a second time and to develop her drawing and painting style in preparation for taking up the post of Artist in Residence at the Aldeburgh Festival.
